Our hero is peacefully living his or her life when:
Breakdown
The Call Something BIG happens that is perceived as a crisis. Our hero is in disbelief, no this isn’t happening to ME. Our reluctant hero begins to see things that he never knew were there. As he begins seeing with real eyes the realization comes over him that the ideal situation that he thought he was living is not the whole story. This is beginning to feel like a nightmare.
The Threshold A series of events cause her to be cast out of the familiar, as changes begin to occur that she could not have anticipated. She finds that she’s tossed out on a journey that she has had no time to prepare for. She feels stuck, the proverbial being caught between a rock and a hard place. At this point she has separated from what is familiar into an unknown place.
Breakup
The Challenges He is faced with a series of problems that he has no idea how to solve. He is afraid and becomes angry and depressed at the same time. He tries bargaining, trying to fix the old situation in an effort to patch it up. He is willing to give up on what meant a lot to him, his dreams. He wonders if it isn’t better to stay with the devil he knows than face a devil that he doesn’t know.
The Abyss She becomes worried, very worried about whether she will even survive this, and thinks “maybe my life is over.” She sees no way out; she can’t go back and she’s terrified of what lies ahead. She becomes more angry, frustrated and afraid.Depression is likely. This abyss that she is experiencing is called the dark night of the soul. There may be strong physical sensations of being nauseated, dizzy, adrenalin rushes and sudden losses of energy. She is further dismayed that things start falling apart financially, her self-esteem is so traumatized that she doesn’t know who she is anymore. She feels like she is damned if she does and dammed if she doesn’t. She has descended to the underworld of danger—the point of no return. She just wants the pain to go away, and may anesthetize her feelings with alcohol or other drugs.
Breakout
The Transformation Our hero confronts death, and decides to follow his heart. He begins to realize that he has to do or die and becomes committed to surviving this trauma. He turns away from the old and searches out new solutions. He finds the warty crone by the side of the road who provides answers—there are other way-showers that appear, angels in unexpected places. He begins to piece together what has happened in a new and clearer way. He is rethinking his priorities as his attitudes shift. He realizes that he isn’t going to die—at least not this time. Our hero has met the fiery dragon, been thrown in the deep, dank dungeon and been lost in the menacing forest with no means to protect himself and he has prevailed, dirty, scratched and bruised, but still-- he has made it through to the other side.
The Revelation There is a dawn of new expectations, a sense of liberation. She surrenders as she increasingly accepts what happened. The pieces of the puzzle are coming together. There is a stirring of excitement, of possibility as despair has turned to hope. When a student is ready, a teacher appears. She realize that she is safe, that she is now stronger than she ever thought that she could be.She knows more than you ever did about how to think, how to act and how to be. She starts believing in miracles because when she looks back at what she has accomplished. She realizes that she is made of more substance, character and strength than she ever thought possible.
Breakthrough
The Atonement This is a period where our hero learns to forgive what has been done to him. There were terrible injustices, but it is over. He has come to realize how he participated in the problem that developed. He is ready to forgive himself. He no longer blames someone else—he’s stopped being a victim. He’s run out of people to blame for his problems. He accepts—it was the way it was. It isn’t anyone’s fault, it just happened. He turns his attention to making amends for his part of the problem. He sees his deficiencies, wrongdoing, and errors and is ready to reconcile these with a rebirth of inviting unity and harmony into his life. The atonement phase is a time of surrender.
The Return Our hero arrives at acceptance of what happened and now focuses her efforts to reconstruct her life to fit who she is today. She is amazed at the journey that she has been on. She celebrates her new found wisdom. She finds that the ultimate treasure is reaching peace of mind and moving on with her life. At least until….the NEXT heroes’ journey begins…...
